The Forgiveness of Jesus

In Mark 2, a paralysed man is brought to Jesus, hoping to be healed. But instead of healing him straight away, Jesus makes an extraordinary declaration: “Your sins are forgiven.” Why did Jesus do this? And what gives him the authority to do something only God can do?
